Deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, along with Lacrosse Fire Rescue and Alachua County Fire Rescue, rushed to the aid of a distressed horse on the NW side of the county on April 9, 2024. Upon arrival, responders discovered the horse trapped and exhausted in a retention pond, struggling to stay afloat. Without hesitation, ACFR responders bravely dove into the pond to stabilize the horse and keep its head above water while the rest of the team quickly devised a rescue plan. With a winch and a makeshift harness fashioned from a 6-inch wide strap, ASO Rural Services executed a forward assist technique to pull the horse to safety. Miraculously, the horse showed responsiveness and regained strength after the harrowing ordeal. With no apparent injuries, the horse was joyfully reunited with its owner, underscoring the importance of teamwork and the dedication of first responders in safeguarding both human and animal lives.
